Building muscle is a pretty straightforward process. Putting your body under loads that stress your muscle will create microtears in your muscle fibers, which are repaired by protein, insulin like growth factor and testosterone. Muscle repair occurs mainly when we are sleeping at night. As we get older it becomes more difficult for our bodies to stimulate new muscle growth because our bodies produce less testosterone as we age. Not everyone needs to train to have muscles like a bodybuilder, but we do want to have the muscle capacity that allows us to protect ourselves and operate safely throughout the day.
