Not All Carbs Are Created Equal

We don’t all need to be nutritionists or dieticians, but it’s always good to know the basic concepts of the nutrition world and how consuming different types of food can affect our bodies.

Not all carbohydrates are terrible to eat. There are many naturale carbohydrate rich foods that have a ton of micronutrients and fiber that are great for your health. With that being said, the food industry has developed many foods that are rich in carbohydrates that have almost no micronutrients and zero fiber. So we digest these simple carbohydrate foods very quickly, which spikes our blood sugar instantly. We must be able to understand that eating natural carbohydrate rich foods, like sweet potatoes and quinoa, are beneficial to our body because of the micronutrients and fiber that comes with them.

A lot of the health and wellness industry has tried to demonize carbohydrates altogether, because research has shown that excessive carbohydrate intake can lead to insulin resistance and metabolic syndromes. As Americans, we take things to the extreme very often because more of something is “always” better than less of something right?.. Wrong. We must be able to balance our diets with healthy amounts of fats, protein and carbohydrates, because that is what will help us the most over the long-term.
